Cartier first started producing coin watches in and around 1929 however records would suggest there were earlier examples of a technique introduced by Joseph Vergely.
Vital Bueche found 'Bueceh Girod' in 1947 and worked together with Cartier to create notable watches including the famously known Maxi-Oval. This particular watch is concealed within a Charles II (1660-1685), five Guinea gold coin, where the button to open the watch is neatly concealed in the coin's band.
