In the late 1950s, Patek Philippe began developing its first antimagnetic movement, the 12 AM 400, in response to a growing demand for watches resistant to magnetic interference, a factor known to severely impact the accuracy of mechanical timepieces. To stay competitive with brands like Omega and Rolex, Patek incorporated additional gold components into the movement, including parts of the escapement such as the anchor, and utilized specialized metal alloys like Nivavox in the hairspring, which had demonstrated strong resistance to magnetic fields. Thus born, the ref. 3410.
