Essay

The Tonneau made its debut in 1906, only two years after Cartier introduced the first, purpose made men's wristwatch: the Santos. Its iconic barrel-shaped case, inspired by the French term "tonneau" for barrel, was a precursor to the stylistic preferences of the Art Deco era: characterized by strength, boldness, and geometric patterns.

The Tonneau has been redesigned at various points in its lifetime and this particular iteration was made in the 1990s with a Platinum case.
